CDV contributes to the Safe E-scooter project, highlighting the growing number of accidents and associated risks. Data show a significant increase in accidents and a strong impact of alcohol.
The number of e-scooter accidents in the Czech Republic is steadily increasing, with alcohol increasingly being a major contributing factor. The Transport Research Centre is involved in addressing this issue through the “Safe E-scooter” project, which highlights the risks associated with their use.
While 432 accidents were recorded in 2023, the number rose to 823 in 2025 – an increase of nearly 90%. At the same time, the number of injured riders has also increased significantly, reaching almost 700 in 2025.
A key issue is riding under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Despite the fact that zero alcohol tolerance applies to e-scooter riders in the Czech Republic, many users still ignore this rule. E-scooters are often used for late-night trips from bars and restaurants, significantly increasing accident risk.
Alcohol or drugs were present in more than a quarter of all e-scooter accidents in 2025. In cases where the rider was at fault, this share reached 43%.

Up to 75% of injury-related accidents occur in urban areas, highlighting the importance of focusing on city environments. Urban traffic presents specific risks such as uneven surfaces, curbs, tram tracks, and varying road conditions that can easily lead to loss of stability.
In 2026, the project will also include research focused on e-scooter behaviour in real-world conditions, including different surfaces, obstacles, and reduced traction scenarios.
