Measuring the brightness of traffic signs

Traffic signage laboratory

The laboratory performs accredited testing of optical properties in the field of vertical traffic signs and horizontal road markings, as well as non-accredited testing of roughness/anti-skid properties of road surfaces and horizontal road markings.

The testing laboratory's services are primarily intended for traffic sign administrators (road administrators and owners). As the parties concerned, they should regularly check the basic properties and parameters of vertical and horizontal traffic signs and verify their service life and functional parameters. The inspection also serves to verify the parameters of traffic signs as a basis for determining their current optical properties before the end of the warranty period.

Roads are equipped with traffic signs that must comply with the relevant standards and regulations. The quality parameters that traffic signs must meet according to these materials can be determined and checked using special instruments. These instruments exist for both vertical and horizontal traffic signs. Our laboratory has the most modern instruments currently available on the market, such as Zehntner ZRS 6060 and ZRM 6014, HunterLab MiniScan EZ, and Stanley London pendulum. We issue an accredited laboratory report on the findings, which lists the measured values. The laboratory is accredited by the Czech Accreditation Institute.

We perform accredited tests:

  • determination of the retroreflection coefficient,

    • Determines the visibility of vertical traffic signs as seen by drivers when illuminated by their vehicle headlights.

  • Determination of trichromatic coordinates and brightness factor,

    • Determines the color quality of light using x, y coordinates in the CIE colorimetric triangle and the brightness factor for vertical and horizontal traffic signs.

  • Determination of the specific luminous intensity coefficient

    • Determines the visibility of horizontal traffic signs as seen by drivers when illuminated by their vehicle headlights (night visibility).

  • Determination of the luminance coefficient under diffuse lighting

    • Determines the visibility of horizontal road markings as seen by drivers in daylight or under artificial lighting (daytime visibility).

We also perform non-accredited tests:

  • Measurement of roughness/anti-skid properties.

    • Determines the roughness value of the surface of horizontal road markings measured by a pendulum.
