CLIMASUM

Project presentation

The CLIMASUM (Climate Mitigation through Sustainable Urban Mobility) project focused on promoting sustainable urban mobility as a key instrument for climate change mitigation and the achievement of the objectives of the European Green Deal. Its primary goal was to strengthen the capacity of cities, regions, and stakeholders to plan and implement climate-neutral transport measures through Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).

The project addressed the fact that many municipalities and regions in Central and South-Eastern Europe still lacked sufficient experience in developing and implementing SUMPs. It therefore concentrated on knowledge transfer, capacity building, and strengthening cooperation between local, regional, and national authorities.

The main objectives included improving coordination among sustainable mobility networks, increasing understanding of barriers to climate-friendly transport solutions, and enhancing the expertise required for planning and implementing sustainable mobility measures. The project targeted public authorities, mobility professionals, academic institutions, young professionals, and civil society organisations.

Project activities included transport sector analyses, policy recommendations, training programmes, workshops, study visits, conferences, and dissemination of best practices. In the Czech Republic, the project contributed to the development of methodological guidance for preparing technical specifications of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans and for institutional cooperation in mobility planning processes.

The project delivered tangible results in the form of strengthened capacities and support for climate-conscious transport planning. One of its key achievements was the Charter for Smart and Sustainable Mobility, signed by 31 cities across five participating countries. By signing the charter, municipalities committed themselves to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable transport systems.

The project consortium included Transport Research Centre (CDV), which coordinated project activities in the Czech Republic through the CIVINET Czech and Slovak Republic Secretariat.
