The construction of cement concrete pavement (CCP) has undergone significant technological changes globally over the past decade, as has the production of the main raw materials – Portland clinker and cement.
Given the environmental improvement targets set out in the European Green Deal, followed by legally binding legislative proposals in the form of the Fit for 55 package, it is necessary to reduce CO2 emissions. Cement plants, as major CO2 producers, are particularly affected by this situation and are forced to change their production portfolio, which currently leads to the production of lower quality cements. One of the options used to reduce CO2 production is to reduce the Portland clinker content in cement, with the aim of replacing it (at least partially) with other components (slag, fly ash, spongilite, finely ground limestone, etc.).
The project takes into account the need to reduce CO2 emissions in clinker production and aims to develop a cement binder with a high belite content (approximately 50%) for the sustainability of transport structures. Suitable types of clinker and cement will be developed and verified in the laboratory and in semi-industrial operation in relation to recipes for CBK or cement-bound base layers of roads, including the identification of other applications of cement for transport structures. The project will also focus on meeting the requirements for laying technology and the standard and technical requirements for practical application. This will be aided by the incorporation of the project results into the newly revised technical conditions for repairs and reconstruction of roads with CBK, verified technology for clinker production in cement plants, a functional sample of the developed cement type, and a sample application example.
O – Other results
Summary of partial changes and recommendations for modifications to parts of TP 91 and TP 92 in relation to the use of a developmental type of cement binder with highly belitic clinker. This will involve specific modifications to individual parts of TP that are relevant to this issue.
Gfunk - Functional sample
The result will describe the final cement composition in relation to its use in cement concrete road pavements. The next phase will be to verify the properties of the mixture, its usability, and effectiveness in practice. The composition of the cement will be functionally verified on selected recipes suitable for CB pavements.
Ztech - Verified technology
Verified technology that will describe the technology for producing cement suitable for CB road surfaces. The procedures for producing clinker and mixing other components for the purpose of preparing cement will be verified and described.
O - Other results
Creation of an appendix "sample application" of cement with a higher belite content for the construction and reconstruction of road surfaces with CB cover according to TP 91 and TP 92. The appendix will contain, in accordance with the usual technical conditions, a basic description of the technology, a description of the work performed, technical and other principles, basic construction requirements, and a pictorial appendix.
This project, Determination and optimization of vegetation strips with natural tree species composition for traffic noise reduction, is co-financed with state support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic under the TRANSPORT 2030 Program. This project is financed under the National Recovery Plan from the European Recovery and Resilience Facility.
