Improvement of the Operational Capability of the South Moravian Fire Rescue Service – Use of a Truck Driving Simulator for Research, Training and Evaluation of Driving Behaviour During Emergency Vehicle Operation

Project presentation

The project focused on improving the safety and effectiveness of training for Fire Rescue Service drivers operating specialised emergency vehicles with blue lights and sirens. Its objective was to use a truck driving simulator as a modern tool for researching driving behaviour, practising critical traffic situations and evaluating driving skills without the risks associated with training in real traffic.

The project resulted in a methodology for research, training and evaluation of firefighters' driving skills using a driving simulator. It also included the development of a database of fire engine traffic accidents together with their analysis and an assessment of the economic benefits of simulator-based training compared with conventional training in real vehicles. The project contributed to the development of modern driver training methods for integrated rescue system units and to improving the safety of emergency response operations.

The project was carried out by the Transport Research Centre.
