The project addressed the decreasing service life of concrete pavements caused by increased alkali ingress from external sources and the subsequent development of alkali–silica reaction. Its objective was to identify the sources of alkalis, assess their impact on concrete deterioration, and develop measures to improve the durability of concrete pavement structures.
The project included analyses of alkali concentrations in concrete pavements of different ages and in their surrounding environment, including pavement layers and subgrade. Laboratory experiments simulated chemical effects on concrete, evaluated the effectiveness of structural and chemical barriers, analysed construction materials and created a database of selected aggregate extraction sites. The project results contribute to improved design and maintenance of concrete pavements, increasing their durability and long-term performance.
