Research on measures to eliminate the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions on secondary roads

Project presentation

The project focuses on wildlife-vehicle collisions involving large mammals on secondary roads and on assessing the effectiveness of measures designed to reduce these incidents. Its objective is to analyse both existing and newly proposed preventive measures and provide expert guidance for their practical application.

The research included studies of driver reactions to wildlife warning signs, evaluation of scent-based deterrents, wildlife reflectors, and acoustic devices, as well as statistical analyses of wildlife mortality on the road network. The project also utilised GPS collars equipped with biologging technology, enabling detailed monitoring of animal movements and responses to individual safety measures.

Based on the collected data, a decision-support software tool was developed. The tool helps road administrators and other responsible stakeholders assess the suitability and expected effectiveness of specific mitigation measures for individual road sections.

The project contributes to improving road safety, protecting wildlife populations, and supporting more efficient planning of preventive measures on high-risk roads.

The project is carried out by Transport Research Centre (CDV).
