Pavel Havránek from CDV appeared on Headline, discussing cyclist safety. While serious injuries are decreasing in Czechia, they are rising in the EU. He also highlighted data underreporting and the role of infrastructure and helmets.
Pavel Havránek, Division of Mobility and Transport System Safety Director at the Transport Research Centre (CDV), was a guest on the Headline programme on TV Nova. The interview focused on the current state of cyclist safety in Czechia and across Europe.
During the discussion, it was highlighted that while the number of seriously injured cyclists is increasing across the European Union, Czechia shows an opposite trend. This positive development is mainly linked to improvements in cycling infrastructure and the introduction of measures such as 30 km/h zones.
At the same time, significant data underreporting was emphasised. Police statistics capture only a portion of all incidents, meaning the real number of injured cyclists is likely much higher.
The interview also addressed other factors influencing safety, including the growing popularity of e-bikes, the increasing share of older cyclists, and the impact of alcohol. Recommendations for improving safety were also discussed, such as better infrastructure, separation of traffic, and increased use of protective helmets.
