CDV researcher Lukáš Kadula spoke on ČT24 about motorcycle safety, the risks of cornering, special road markings and the importance of a safe riding line.
Lukáš Kadula, a researcher at the Transport Research Centre (CDV), was a guest on the Sunday edition of Czech Television’s Studio ČT24, where he discussed motorcycle safety, the risks associated with cornering and a special road marking designed to help motorcyclists choose a safer riding line.
Almost 40% of motorcyclists who die in road crashes lose their lives in corners. In fatal crashes involving motorcyclists in corners, the proportion of crashes attributed to the motorcyclist’s own fault exceeds 80%. Excessive speed is the main contributing factor. Crashes in corners are also more than twice as severe as motorcycle crashes overall.
One of the measures aimed at improving safety is the use of special elliptical markings placed close to the centre line. These markings help motorcyclists choose a more appropriate trajectory through a corner and reduce the risk of parts of the motorcycle or the rider’s body crossing into the opposite lane while leaning. Following the first application of this measure last year, the markings are now being extended to additional road sections.
Lukáš Kadula also pointed out that the number of motorcyclists on Czech roads is increasing. In the first seven months of this year, more than 40 motorcyclists were killed in road crashes, representing a year-on-year increase of 50%. Road safety is therefore not only a matter of motorcyclists’ behaviour, but also of the attention of other road users. During the summer months, Kadula emphasised the importance of repeatedly checking for motorcycles when turning or entering intersections. He also referred to the current “Hele motorka!” campaign of the Road Safety Department (BESIP) of the Czech Ministry of Transport.
The interview also addressed the importance of appropriate protective clothing. Even a short journey should not be a reason to underestimate protective equipment. Proper footwear, gloves, suitable clothing and, of course, a helmet all play an important role in reducing the consequences of a crash.
