Last year, the safest roads were in Pardubice, where no one was killed in 781 accidents; Hradec Králové ranked second and Ústí nad Labem third. Brno fared the worst. The GČP INDEX assesses the severity of traffic accidents in regional capitals.
At the Transport Research Centre, we regularly assist in compiling data for the calculation of the GČP INDEX. Here are the results for last year.
Last year, the safest roads among all regional capitals in the Czech Republic were in Pardubice, where there were 781 traffic accidents resulting in no fatalities and three serious injuries. Hradec Králové came in second, followed by Ústí nad Labem in third. Of the 206 municipalities with extended jurisdiction, 33 saw fatal traffic accidents on their roads.
Pardubice Safest, Brno at the Bottom
According to the GČP INDEX results for the entire year 2024, driving was safest in Pardubice, where 781 traffic accidents occurred without any fatalities, though three people were seriously injured. For Pardubice, this is the historically lowest GČP index value and thus the best result. Hradec Králové finished in second place, while Ústí nad Labem climbed to third. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Plzeň ranked 11th, Jihlava fell to 12th place, and Brno took the worst spot, 13th, where 8 people were killed and 58 were seriously injured in 1,839 traffic accidents. Brno thus remains at the bottom of the GČP INDEX, where it also ranked in 2023.

GČP INDEX at a Glance
The GČP Index measures the relative severity of traffic accidents within the built-up areas of regional capitals and municipalities with extended powers. The measurement includes all 13 regional capitals and 206 municipalities with extended powers. The index value indicates the ratio of serious and fatal accidents (i.e., accidents resulting in serious injury or death) to the total number of accidents recorded within the territory of the aforementioned cities over a specific period. The higher the index value, the worse the traffic safety situation in a particular city.
