GČP INDEX for the First Half of 2026: Olomouc Leads, While Road Deaths in Regional Capitals Decline

The GČP INDEX for the first half of 2026 shows fewer road deaths and serious injuries in regional capitals. Olomouc leads the ranking, while vulnerable road users remain highly exposed.

The GČP INDEX for the first half of 2026 provides an up-to-date view of road safety in Czech cities. The Transport Research Centre (CDV) has been contributing to its preparation for Generali Česká pojišťovna over the long term. The latest data show a year-on-year decline in the number of road deaths and seriously injured people in regional capitals, while also highlighting the continuing risks faced by vulnerable road users.

Olomouc takes the lead

According to the GČP INDEX for the first half of 2026, Olomouc ranked first among the 13 Czech regional capitals, followed by Liberec and Ostrava. Olomouc recorded 687 road crashes, with one person seriously injured. Brno ranked last, followed by Jihlava and České Budějovice.

The results should be considered in the context of the period covered. The GČP INDEX for the first half of the year is based on a relatively short period, meaning that in cities with a lower number of crashes, a single serious crash can have a significant impact on the index value. The GČP INDEX web application therefore also allows users to compare results over longer periods, including 36 months.

Fewer road deaths and serious injuries

A total of 12,476 road crashes were recorded in the regional capitals during the first half of 2026, representing a 6% year-on-year increase. Despite this increase, the number of road deaths fell by 60% to 8, while the number of seriously injured people decreased by 24% to 127.

The GČP INDEX also focuses specifically on vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Their share among the victims of serious crashes remains high. In the regional capitals, vulnerable road users accounted for 75% of road deaths and 78.7% of seriously injured people.

The GČP INDEX provides a broader perspective beyond regional capitals as well. It covers all 13 regional capitals and 206 municipalities with extended powers, enabling road safety to be monitored across cities and municipalities of different sizes throughout the Czech Republic.

During the first half of 2026, 23,266 road crashes were recorded in the built-up areas of the 206 municipalities with extended powers. These crashes resulted in 23 deaths and 240 serious injuries. Fatal crashes occurred in 19 municipalities, while 119 of the monitored municipalities recorded no road deaths or serious injuries connected with road crashes during the period.

Data supporting road safety monitoring

The GČP INDEX measures the severity of road crashes in built-up areas of cities and municipalities. In addition to the current ranking, it enables users to monitor developments over time and assess the situation of vulnerable road users separately. The data therefore provide another basis for monitoring road safety developments in Czech cities.

The latest results and their development over time are available through the GČP INDEX web application.
