On Sunday, March 16, 2025, Czech Television aired an episode of the program *Historie.cs* titled “From the Baltic to the Adriatic” on its ČT2 channel, which focused on one of the most important trade routes of ancient Europe—the Amber Road.
Representing the Transport Research Center (CDV), the program’s guest was Jan Martínek, M.A., a geoinformatics expert and specialist in historical routes. In a discussion moderated by Jiří Šesták, alongside archaeologists Assoc. Prof. Martin Golc from Palacký University in Olomouc and Assoc. Prof. Ondřej Chvojka from the South Bohemian Museum in České Budějovice, he highlighted the significance of the Amber Road for Central Europe and the Czech lands.
The Amber Road was not only an important trade route along which valuable amber traveled from the Baltic coast to the Mediterranean, but also a significant communication corridor that brought technological innovations, cultural influences, and new ideas. In our region, amber was not only transported but also processed—it was here that centers for the production of jewelry and other artifacts emerged.
During the program, Jan Martínek drew on his many years of experience in the field of historical route research. As part of the NAKI programs, he led two national projects—“Research on Historical Routes of Northwestern Moravia and Eastern Bohemia” and “Moravian Crossroads”—which examined Moravia’s communication links with Central Europe. Among other things, the Moravian Crossroads project resulted in an exhibition on the Amber Road, accompanied by a catalog. He is also the co-author of the publication “The Amber Road,” which maps the history of this significant route in detail.
The program is available online on ČT iVysílání
