Issue 4 of the ‘Safe Transport’ newsletter (2026) has been published. It features an overview of accident figures for January to September, a feature on a new video podcast about the consequences of accidents, CDV research and the latest international trends in road safety.
The Transport Research Centre and BESIP have published the fourth issue of the specialist newsletter *Safe Transport* for 2026. This latest issue provides a detailed review of trends in road accident rates and presents a number of key findings from research and international practice.
Accident statistics and implementation of the BESIP Strategy
Statistics for the first to third quarters of 2026 show that 328 people were killed and 1,301 seriously injured on Czech roads. An analysis of the indicators reveals that the objectives of the BESIP Strategy were not fully met in these areas, primarily due to an increase in the severity of injuries among vulnerable road users. Conversely, positive trends continue to be seen in the lower number of drink-driving accidents and in compliance with safe following distances.
Video podcast ‘Experience it with us’
The main theme of this issue is a new preventative video podcast that puts a human face to dry statistics. Through 21 authentic stories of people affected by accidents and the insights of forty experts, it shows how a single mistake behind the wheel can have a lasting impact on the lives of entire families. The project serves as a valuable tool for prevention in driving schools and in BESIP’s public awareness campaigns.
New scientific studies and research on CDV
Researchers at the CDV have published a number of significant findings. The newsletter examines, for example, a successful pilot study into the impact of fencing along the D10 motorway, which confirmed a significant reduction in collisions with wildlife without driving them onto surrounding roads. It also focuses on an analysis of the risks of cyclists colliding with car doors being opened, and on mapping unauthorised access to railway tracks.
International security inspiration
The final section brings you news from around the world. In it, you can read about the widespread introduction of a 30-kilometre speed limit on residential roads in Japan, new rules governing the use of electric scooters in Spain, and EU initiatives aimed at making lorries safer.
