How do train drivers perceive Automatic Train Operation?
Automation is gradually becoming part of railway transport. For its use to be not only technically feasible but, above all, safe and beneficial for the people who operate these systems, researchers need to understand the experience of those working in railway operations every day.
The Transport Research Centre (CDV) is therefore investigating train drivers’ attitudes and experiences with Automatic Train Operation (AVV) as part of the project Limits of Human Factor Reliability in Interaction with Automation Systems of Rail Vehicles (CL02000022).
The research is open to train drivers who use AVV as well as those who have not yet encountered the system or do not use it. Different experiences and perspectives can help identify situations in which automation supports train drivers in their work, as well as those in which it may present potential challenges.
Your experience matters
The research team is focusing on how different levels of automation affect train drivers’ work and how their use can be designed to support safe and user-friendly railway operations.
The research includes an anonymous questionnaire that takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Responses cannot be linked to individual participants. The researchers therefore welcome open answers based on your own experience and perception.
The findings will provide one of the inputs for defining appropriate rules for the use of automation systems and for their further development. The aim is to identify solutions that respond to operational needs while also contributing to safety.
The research is conducted as part of the Limits of Human Factor Reliability in Interaction with Automation Systems of Rail Vehicles (CL02000022) project, funded with state support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Transport under the DOPRAVA 2030 Programme.
