The rail transport research team focuses on applied research, innovation, and expert support for the development of rail infrastructure and operations, with an emphasis on sustainability and environmental friendliness.
It implements projects within national and international research programs as well as commercial contracts for private and public clients.
Its professional activities cover a wide range of topics – from international cooperation and the development of cross-border transport, through environmental impact assessments (CO₂ emissions, energy intensity, externalities), to safety analyses, operational technologies, and expert reviews of project documentation.
The team's development projects also include promising topics such as the use of polymer materials in railway infrastructure, autonomous tram control, the implementation of automatic couplers, the electrification of the Czech railway network, and the conversion of the traction power supply system.
Currently, an intensively discussed topic is the energy and emission intensity of rail transport and the possibilities of using low-emission technologies (e.g., hydrogen and battery technologies), including an assessment of the conditions under which their deployment is an effective solution, also from an economic perspective. In connection with this issue, we are developing emission calculations in accordance with the ČSN EN ISO 14083 standard.
