Psychology laboratory

The psychological laboratory is used for traffic psychological diagnostics of drivers, including professional drivers. It is conducted on a computer and is followed by an interview with a traffic psychologist. We use the Vienna Test System, one of the most advanced diagnostic tools in the Czech Republic, for testing.

Traffic psychological examination

Why is it necessary?

In order to have your driver's license returned (e.g., after losing all your points), you must, among other things, undergo a traffic psychological examination (so-called "psychological tests for drivers"). The obligation to undergo a traffic psychological examination is imposed by Act No. 361/2000 Coll. (on road traffic in § 87a paragraph 3): A driver who applies for the return of a driver's license under § 123d is required to undergo a traffic psychological examination.

For whom is a traffic psychological examination mandatory?

  • For the purposes of returning a driver's license,

  • for "drivers who have lost all their points" when applying for the return of a driver's license after 12 months of losing all their points,

  • from July 1, 2013: for drivers with a driving ban,

  • after any driving ban imposed in criminal proceedings (court),

  • after a driving ban imposed in administrative proceedings for at least 6 months (this is the period imposed in the decision, not the length of the ban actually served since July 1, 2013, for drivers "on probation").

  • when undertaking to refrain from driving motor vehicles as part of a conditional postponement of a motion for punishment or as part of a conditional suspension of criminal proceedings,

  • for the purposes of performing work and obtaining qualifications,

  • for holders of driving licenses of categories C1E, C, CE, if they drive a truck or special vehicle with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 7,500 kg or a combination of a truck or special vehicle and a trailer with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 7,500 kg,

  • holders of driving licenses for categories D1E, D, or DE, if they drive a motor vehicle classified in one of these categories,

  • professional drivers who must undergo a traffic psychological examination before starting work, then at least 6 months before reaching the age of 50 and then every 5 years. (The traffic psychological examination must be submitted during a regular medical examination, see Act 361/2000, § 87a (1) and (2).

  • driving school instructors - before taking the exam to obtain a professional driving school instructor certificate,

  • for the purpose of obtaining a driver's license,

  • at the request of a general practitioner - if the examining physician requests such an examination.

Who performs traffic psychological examinations?

Since August 1, 2012, only psychologists accredited by the Ministry of Transport are authorized to perform traffic psychological examinations. There are currently approximately 260 accredited traffic psychologists in the Czech Republic.

What do you need to bring with you to the traffic psychological examination?

  • Your ID card

  • An extract from your driver's record card

  • A medical fitness assessment from your general practitioner (not older than 30 days)

  • A hearing aid or glasses, if you use them.

You should arrive at the examination on time, well-rested, reasonably well-slept, and in good physical and mental condition.

The course of the traffic psychological examination

The scope, content, and method of conducting a traffic psychological examination are regulated by § 18c of Decree No. 31/2001 Coll. of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, on driver's licenses and the driver's register, as amended.

It includes:

  • An introductory interview during which the person being assessed is familiarized with the conditions, course, and purpose of the traffic psychological examination, confirms in writing that their physical and mental condition allows for the traffic psychological examination to be performed, and provides information about any previous traffic psychological examinations.

  • Examination of mental performance in terms of quantity and quality – intellect, attention (especially its concentration, distribution, and scope), sensory-motor reactivity and coordination (especially in terms of the speed and accuracy of sensory-motor responses to a series of visual or acoustic stimuli in a time-pressured situation), decision-making (especially in terms of speed and reliability under time pressure), memory (especially visual) and other mental functions, if necessary.

  • Examination of personality traits, including in particular examination of emotional stability, lability and impulsivity, adaptive behavior, risk-taking tendencies, stress resistance, psychopathological symptoms, and other personality traits, if necessary.

Examination results

You will receive a report with the results of the traffic psychology examination after the examination is completed. The person being assessed may be:

  • mentally fit to drive motor vehicles,

  • mentally fit to drive motor vehicles with conditions, or

  • mentally unfit to drive motor vehicles.

In case of failure, the traffic psychological examination can be repeated after 3 months at the earliest. Copies of the assessments are sent to your local authority (municipality with extended powers according to your place of residence), where they are kept on file.
