A new CDV study classified Czech municipalities into seven groups based on accident rates, transport investments and road safety activities, providing a basis for more effective safety policies.
Abstract
The study focuses on analysing the relationships between traffic accident rates, municipal transport expenditures, and their activities in the field of road safety. The aim is to identify groups of municipalities with similar characteristics. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to reduce data dimensionality, followed by cluster analysis using the k-means method. As a result, municipalities were divided into seven distinct groups that differ in the intensity of transport measures and investments, as well as in accident rates. This categorisation enables a better understanding of differences among municipalities, reveals their strengths and weaknesses in road safety, and provides a basis for more effective targeting of traffic safety policies.
