A new study shows that winter air pollution caused by residential heating can be as high as—or even higher—in rural communities than in cities, posing significant health risks.

A new study, published in Environmental Research, presents one of the most comprehensive assessments of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) air pollution in Central Europe. Based on measurements from 120 locations and more than 2,000 air samples, the researchers demonstrate that residential heating with solid fuels—not road transport—is the dominant source of winter PAH pollution.
The findings confirm the so-called rural air quality paradox: during the heating season, small municipalities can experience benzo[a]pyrene concentrations comparable to or even higher than those recorded in large cities. The study also highlights that the associated health risks are not limited to urban environments but significantly affect rural communities as well.
The authors conclude that future air quality policies should place greater emphasis on reducing emissions from residential heating and supporting cleaner household heating technologies. The research provides valuable evidence for improving both public health protection and environmental policy.
