The EfektBESIP project will connect Czech and Slovak experience and provide tools for more systematic approaches to transport safety in border areas.
Transport does not stop at national borders. Differences in infrastructure, traffic conditions and local experience therefore require cooperation and the sharing of knowledge. This is the focus of the new EfektBESIP project – Effective cooperation in the Valašsko and Kysuce regions to improve transport safety, launched in September by the Transport Research Centre together with the towns of Valašské Meziříčí and Čadca.
The project will connect the expertise and experience of Czech and Slovak partners. Its aim is to address common road and rail safety challenges in cross-border towns and to bring proven approaches into public-sector practice.
One of the key topics will be the systematic management of transport safety at the local level. The project will therefore support the preparation of a local BESIP road safety strategy for Čadca and a guide for developing strategies that take the specific characteristics of border areas into account. Partners will also share experience with BESIP committees and prepare recommendations that can be used by other towns.
The project will also focus on railway crossing safety and trespassing. At selected high-risk locations, patterns of road-user behaviour will be monitored and analysed. The findings will provide a basis for preventive and technical safety measures.
Transport surveys, education and awareness-raising activities will form another important part of the project. The aim is to ensure that the results are not limited to analyses, but provide useful evidence for public authorities when deciding on specific road safety measures. The project will also involve experts, teachers, children and residents of the cross-border towns.
Connecting experience from both countries is one of the project's key added values. In border areas, individual safety measures cannot always be addressed in isolation. Sharing data, experience and good practice can help partners identify risks more effectively and develop better ways of preventing them.
Within the project, CDV brings its role as an independent research institution, connecting research knowledge with the needs of towns and public authorities. The aim is not to develop solutions detached from practice, but to provide evidence, experience and tools that can support better-informed transport safety decisions.

The EfektBESIP project will run for 24 months, from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2028. It is implemented under the Interreg Slovakia–Czechia 2021–2027 programme and co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
